Snow Farm Summer in Art

On our 50-acre Berkshire foothills farm, we run craft programs including glass blowing, flameworking, welded sculpture, ceramics, metalsmithing, fiber arts, woodworking, photography and painting.

With only nine students and two instructors per studio, Snow Farm Summer provides a small group setting for intensive artistic study and collaboration. Students, faculty, and staff come together from across the country and with many different ideas to form a community committed to each other and their work. Studio instructors are accomplished artists; Heads of Studio have an MFA or equivalent in their medium, and Studio Assistants must have at least a BA. We seek out instructors who are also fun, generous, and enjoy working with teenagers.

Six hours of daily instruction is split between a morning and afternoon studio with an emphasis on both process and product. Students have an additional four hours of open studio time which can be split or shared between each of their studios in whatever way best serves the student’s projects and discovery process. With occasional evening presentations, field trips, and organized group acitivites, the days at Snow Farm Summer are exciting, focused, fun, and full of growth.

Our professionally equipped studios and modern living spaces blend into the buildings and landscape of the historic 1700s farm that belonged at one time to the Snow family. Four dorm buildings feature double rooms and a shared single-sex bathroom. The kitchen and dining hall, a focal point of daily life, serves home-cooked meals made with fresh local ingredients. Formal and informal participation in the kitchen contributes to the communal nature of living at Snow Farm.

The program changed my life. I had grown up wanted to be a veterinarian, but had always been artsy on the side. Snow Farm opened my eyes to my love of art and because of it, I am currently studying metalsmithing and art history at the university level. The Snow Farm High Scho... (more »)
