By Alyssa D., E. Northport, NY

The past few years we spent in the watermelon patch
Staring at the golden sky being polluted by the factories
Watching the charcoal smoke dance between
the pearl clouds
Waiting for black and white to mix to gray
But sometimes it never did
Sometimes our eyes were hypnotized waiting
Waiting for something that never had to come
But we’d still lie there
Resting our heads against the juicy fruit
As we became heartless people
And when night came we’d sleep there ’til next morning
Which we’d spend there too
And all the days that would follow
Commoners would ignore us as they passed by
But we had grown emotionless
The past few years we spent in the watermelon patch
Doing just as the watermelons
Rotting away
