By Jessica H., Salem, MA

My fallen soldier never fell where he belonged

In those battlefields of the bodies and blood of his friends

No, he didn't fall then

He came home to his protected battlefield

Where he fought love in all directions

Where he died old with children and grandchildren

My fallen soldier never fell where he belonged

But his flag lay folded in a triangle

Collecting dust in the bottom drawer of his old bureau

Pictures still swim around haunting those who don't accept

The pictures I want to steal of him with me smiling

Thinking of it makes me close the drawer where the flag lays

Because my fallen soldier never fell where he belonged
