Breaking The Silence

By Melissa D., Duxbury, MA

   Dead silence.

No voices were audible;

Only the clangs of silverware,

The clattering of plates.

Breaking the silence,

Mom and Dad argued;

Their voices rising in volume.

My brother and I

Giving each other "rolling-eye" looks,

Bored with the same conversations.

Wishing the food would disappear

So we could leave.

But it went on.

So, we laughed a little,

Sneered a bit,

Hoping they'd notice

The stupidity of their disagreement.
