Big Dad is what we call you; David is how the world knows you,
You’re my granddad and nothing will change that,
You were there for me when my true father left,
His place in my heart was filled with the love and memories spent with you.

Sitting upon the tool box in the tractor watching as the sun dipped into the western skies,
The smell of sweet cigars and watching the smoke billow into the air as rings,
The rings metaphorically complete my life and make it whole,
Your love protects, rejects and comforts.

My heart, so much shaped like yours, cannot forget the life you have saved for me,
Taught me to love learning and embrace my faith,
Always are you teaching me the differences in 2005 and 1965.
The past so dim and dark, brightened by the thought of times spent with you,
The good times when no war was being fought and times when peace rang clear,
We were able to share stories and I could capture the feeling of what a real father truly is.

Time has changed, Granddad, but my love for you never will,
My heart has strengthened and my body has grown ...
But I’ll always remember the times sitting in your lap,
Lost in the warmth of happiness surrounding me,
I love you, Big Dad, and never will my heart change.
