I wish I could understand my father
He was that guy who always got in trouble
Always fighting the world
At least that’s what my mom always told me

I mean, he left when I was off to school for the first time
I came home yelled for my dad and nothing
No one came for me - no one came to ask how my day was
He must have gone out - he’ll be back soon

Four years later I realized Daddy wasn’t coming home
My mom tried to explain to me
How he just had to go somewhere and he would be back soon
Come back to hug me or play a game

He never came back home where his little man was
I didn’t get it at first - why had he abandoned me?
Why had he left me and Mommy?
Did he not love us - did she do something wrong?

I saw him one day in the store years later
He had a kid by him who was clutching his leg
So, what you in the mood for today, kid
I walked up to him and asked if I knew him

Nope, I don’t think you do know me - am I supposed to know you?
