there were three
standing
in my kitchen
tall, powerful
green

their roots
and leaves
dwarfed
my sorry
pie plate

I panicked
fretted
had a staring contest
consulted
my bible

the sink
became
my O.R.
the paring knife
my scalpel

who knew
veggies and
sand
were such
good friends?

even minced
they dominated
my stove
a mountain
of green

I boiled
toiled
and packed
for my trouble
I got a pie

we are now
on speaking terms
I am a foe
worth reckoning
with

they know me
and I am
acquainted
with the domain
of leeks
