I took this book
Like a violent lover;
I tore its cover,
Inhaled its song,
Mixed right and wrong,
Devoured whole
Its printed soul.
The back fell away,
It had nothing to say
A summary and quote
Which hardly did justice
To what Steinbeck wrote.
I stole this book
From an English room,
Desiring to use
And rip and consume,
Craving each page
From this eloquent sage
Who spoke from the spine
With each low, vibrant line.
I burned my way through
Each dry, black letter.
Oh Steinbeck, Steinbeck,
You made me better..
