Summary:
John Douglas Baldwin is about to become the heir to his father's estate as his father's health declines rapidly. The father and son have an equal hatred of each other. The father because he believes his son to be incompetent, and desires his younger son to take his place. The son because of the abusive nature of his father, and his fear that he will turn out to be like his father. He is being helped by his dear Rhona, who he plans to marry once he becomes baron.
